Preparing Effectively for Exams
As we approach the exam and assessment season, it’s natural for both students and parents to feel a sense of anticipation. Exams are a significant part of the educational journey, helping students to consolidate their learning and prepare for future challenges. At Repton School Dubai, we believe in a holistic approach to education where the expertise provided in school is met with a balance of wellbeing so that school and home share this crucial role in the success of our students.
Many parents will look to develop a suitable study area is essential for effective learning at home. This space should be quiet, well-lit, and free from distractions such as television and social media. Ensure that it is equipped with all the necessary supplies your child might need, such as textbooks, notebooks, pens, and a computer if required. It’s also important to establish a routine that includes regular study breaks to maintain concentration and reduce stress.
If you feel it will help, then do work with your child to create a study schedule that balances their revision with adequate and important brain breaks and leisure activities! This helps manage stress and prevents burnout. Encourage them to tackle more challenging subjects or topics during their peak concentration times of the day and save lighter revision or subjects they enjoy for times when they may not be as focused.
Talk to your child about their feelings and any anxieties they might have regarding the exams. Listening is just as important as giving advice. Ensure they know that their worth is not determined solely by their academic performance and that you value their hard work regardless of outcomes. Most of the assessments this term for Repton students will be formative – this means that there is key learning and progress to take place from finding out what students know or can improve on. This reassurance can significantly alleviate any potential assessment pressure.
Physical health has a significant impact on academic performance. Encourage your child to maintain a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and sufficient sleep. Discourage late-night cramming and instead, promote a steady and sustainable study rhythm leading up to exams.
Ensure our Reptonians understand the importance of downtime. Encouraging activities that help them relax and unwind can improve both their mental and physical health, leading to better performance when they return to studying. Whether it’s a family movie night, a walk in the park, or reading a book, downtime is crucial.
Exam season can be a demanding time for our children, but with the right support and strategies, it can also be a period of significant achievement and growth. By partnering with your child and supporting our school, you provide a solid support system that enhances their confidence and abilities. At Repton, we are committed to working with our students to foster a growth mindset that is full of energy to take on challenges and see them as learning opportunities.
Remember, the key to successful exam preparation is balance. With your support, your child can approach their assessments with confidence and resilience.
